.tel management updates

September 24th, 2009 dottel 1 comment

New updates to the telhosting interface allow you to:

  1. Rename folders Managing your sub-domains has just become so much easier. You can now rename a folder, and all links to it throughout your domain will be updated automatically. Note that the opposite won’t work: editing a “Go to” link to a folder does not change the folder name.
  2. Give your .tel a title You can now change the default title of your .tel page to any text you like—so nestle.tel can now say Nestlé! Use any language and special characters, and up to 255 bytes of text, individual for every folder. Just click Edit for the heading above the Profile menu on the Dashboard.
  3. Show off your usernames With the new username type in Contact items, you can add all your gaming handles, virtual characters and usernames to your .tel page. Your .tel is now your virtual identity! Create a new contact item “username” with the name and add a comment for details.

Now you can advertise on .tel domains with TelAds

September 23rd, 2009 dottel 1 comment

.tel owners can now store and display sponsored weblinks, sponsored telephone numbers and related content on their .tel domains to both monetize and enhance the discovery of them through search engines.

Following the announcement in August at TelCamp Toronto of a new type of record being made available to .tel owners to store TelAds in the DNS, the web proxy has now been enhanced to display TelAds in a format appropriate for both PC-based and mobile device-based browsers. Up to twelve ads or pieces of related content can be hosted per .tel sub-folder, with a .tel domain supporting up to 3,000 sub-folders.

These sponsored link TelAds and related content records will enable .tel owners to further monetize their .tel domains, either through pay-per-click or pay-per-call links. Additionally, text-based content can be served to these records, enabling .tel domain owners to sign up to automated content providers and easily refresh the content on their .tel domains to enable better search engine optimization and re-indexing.

A whitepaper enabling .tel owners to find out more about TelAds can be found at http://dev.telnic.org/docs/advertisements.pdf. A paper is also available for potential ad serving networks and related content providers discussing how to identify and deliver appropriate content to .tel domains at http://telnic.org/downloads/tel-ads.pdf

A free tool is available for inserting adverts onto any .tel domain. In fact, you can insert up to 12 adverts per folder, and with a max of 3,000 folders per site, theoretically you can have thousands of ads inside one tel domain.

Momentum for .tel domain grows

September 22nd, 2009 dottel No comments

Telnic Limited (http://telnic.tel), the registry operator for new communications focused .tel top level domain (TLD), today announced that as momentum for .tel domains grow in the UK, BT Business is set to launch an advertising campaign across Bloomberg Television and a new website at http://bt.com/tel.

Carl di Cicco, Head of eCommerce for BT Business, said: “With a .tel, BT Business customers will now be able streamline their contact information by giving out a name or branded contact point rather multiple addresses and numbers. Additionally, this can be accessed from any device and even dialed directly by some phones. The vision of people dialing names and not numbers in future is one that BT subscribes to and, as such, .tel is an important offering for our customers.”

Adding to the BT launch news, recognition of the innovation and potential that .tel is bringing to the communications industry has also come from The British Computing Society and IT industry publication Computing, with Telnic being shortlisted as a finalist in the inaugural UK IT Industry Awards in 2009. “The UK is the second largest market for .tel domains after North America, so we’re excited to see the momentum and recognition and support from the technology industry and partners building,” said Justin Hayward, Communications Director for Telnic.

“With the recent interest from individuals in vanity domain names for recognition and branding online, added to the ease of use and low cost, .tel domains can now be a mainstream consideration for individuals, professionals and businesses of all sizes.”

Telnic will also soon be exhibiting at further UK events later this year. More information about .tel domains can be found at ad:tech London on 22nd – 24th September as well as Digital Engagement on 6th October. Telnic also confirmed that it would again be a sponsor of The Business Startup Exhibition on November 26th and 27th at Earls Court Olympia.

.tel domain monetization techniques announced

August 13th, 2009 dottel No comments

A new solution for text-based advertising listings for the .tel domain, enabling .tel domain owners to use more traditional and measurable domain monetization techniques.

“Whilst .tel domains provide new ways of generating revenue through the support and optimization of premium rate telephone numbers, software downloads, ringtones and competition-based formats, we recognized that those used to traditional monetization methods still felt somewhat restricted,” said Henri Asseily, CTO and Chief Strategist at Telnic Limited. “We have therefore enabled .tel owners to include clearly identifiable, text-based sponsored advertising links. In this way, we maintain the clear purpose of a .tel domain as a single point of contact whilst also meeting the requirements for monetization across all internet-enabled devices.”

The solution has been to introduce a special sub-type of a text (TXT) record with a ‘.tad’ suffix. This is stored in a special folder within the .tel domain. This record contains the title, label, description and URI to use in the advertisement, as well as display settings which enable the domain owner to position the advert in their chosen place on the page (top, bottom or right) when the content is delivered to the proxy page. When the proxy loads a .tel domain, it checks the format and settings of the adverts and displays them accordingly.

.tel Story of Bernard Giraudeau

July 28th, 2009 dottel No comments

bgiraudeau1 .tel Story of Bernard GiraudeauBernardGiraudeau.tel –  Bernard Giraudeau, actor, writer and director has recently got his .tel – reports ToutPointTel, the French-speaking .tel website.

He speaks directly and emotionally, but isn’t too chatty or focused on technical trivia, which is very refreshing for me, somebody who’s been professionally involved in the high-tech industry for so long.

Bernard, what’s your relation with IT, Internet, and technology in general?

None. I’m an old dog, not a fan of tech gadgets in the least. I don’t own an iPhone, I write most of my books by hand, and I’m hardly interested in technology at all.

Then why did you get a .tel?

Because I find it very simple and easy contrary to many complex devices that I gave up on.

You travel a lot. What do you think of SOS1.tel, a .tel website with emergency numbers in 134 countries?

I think it’s an excellent idea because it’s simple and practical. If you’re in trouble, use SOS1.tel and in a few seconds you’re connected to the emergency rescue service that you need.
Of course, the website isn’t of much use to those that, like me, mostly travel in remote areas far from everything. If you’re in the midst of the Philippine jungle, SOS1.tel will be less useful than if you fell victim or witnessed violance in the streets of Manilla. At the same time, Manilla is far more dangerous than the jungle…

Can you comment on your future literary and film projects?

I don’t have any plans at the moment. I’ve just finished promoting my latest book (Cher amour, published by Editions Metailie) and I need some rest. May prepare some lectures, write a bit, but certainly nothing for movies.

Qwista.com makes .tel domain totally searchable

July 27th, 2009 dottel No comments

The new thematic top level domain .tel is promising to become the universal contact information directory. Until recently, however, searching the .tel domain was rather tricky and what’s more important – not always successful. But all that is about to change with the launch of Qwista.com, the powerful search engine designed specifically for .tel websites.

iPhone eng 158x300 Qwista.com makes .tel domain totally searchableQwista.com makes .tel domain totally searchable, bringing all the .tel data to your fingertips. With Qwista it gets extremely easy to find the contact details of a business or an individual, even if you failed to remember the exact .tel address. The new search engine employs its own proprietary database and algorithm to deliver the most relevant results and comprehensive coverage, allowing its users to fully utilize .tel’s communication capabilities. The advanced language-independent algorithm allows searching pages in any language. Morphological search, ensuring improved relevancy, is already available for English, German and Russian, and it’s only a question of time for other languages.

Initially, .tel pages are not divided into commercial and personal ones, and it complicates search significantly. A user has to make his way through a dozen of various company pages before he finds the page of a new friend, and vice-versa. Qwista addresses this problem, offering the option of searching commercial and personal pages separately. It analyzes the content of a page to include it into one of these two categories, providing the results as accurate as possible in this situation, and thus ensuring comfortable searching experience for a user.

Lightweight, efficient and easy-to-use, Qwista delivers its capabilities in the intuitive interface optimized for mobile devices. With all the advantages offered, the system clearly claims to be the first choice for anyone looking for a reliable .tel search engine.

.tel Story of Oliver Humpage

.tel Story of Oliver HumpageOliver Humpage, Watershed’s ICT Co-ordinator explains how Watershed.tel works. Launched this week, watershed.tel is a strong example of how a .tel domain can be used for near real-time communication in a simple-to- access format. Bristol-based Watershed Media Centre has 3 cinema screens, several events spaces and a Café/Bar, and has lots of events both film and not film.

“Watershed opened in 1982 as Britain’s first dedicated Media Centre – that is, concentrating on photography and the moving image. Watershed’s strength is its ability to mix up creativity, learning, R&D and business in ways which benefit everyone. ”

“The internet is a vital part of Watershed’s activities. We started experimenting with online content in 1999 (we got a symmetric 10Mb internet connection, well before broadband was widespread), and we were one of the first places in Bristol to offer completely free wireless access in our Café/Bar. ”

“As a result of these early experiments we concentrated more and more on online artwork and activities, until we reached a point around 2004 where we made a conscious decision to stop having “traditional” exhibitions in the building at all. http://dshed.net is our online showcase, which is currently undergoing a major redevelopment to help it cope with the sheer quantity of creative output it’s trying to display. ”

Wshed Icon .tel Story of Oliver Humpage“Watershed is a rarity in the arts world, having a relatively large IT department and managing as much IT as possible in-house. This gives us the knowledge and flexibility to experiment with new technologies. A large part of being a successful IT dept relies on having the time and skills available to do R&D, coupled with an underlying recognition that technology is there to help people communicate more easily and more effectively. ” Read more…
